Pier 86, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, New York City
Due to significant degradation of the timber piles and joists supporting portions of Pier 86 at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, an ongoing maintenance effort is taking place using American Composite Timber’s pile-posting system. The scope of the project includes removing the existing, rotted timber elements and replacing them with recycled plastic members. This system offers a durable, cost-effective means of restoring the pier’s structural integrity while keeping the pier in service.
The following pictures demonstrate the start to finish of one section of the ongoing pier repair. A portion of the concrete deck is removed, exposing the existing damaged pile and joist timbers. The pile postings are repaired using ACT Composite Timber pile-posting systems in combination with composite piles. Once the structural integrity of the support portion of the pier is restored, new rebar is installed prior to repouring the concrete pad.
ACT’s pile posting system is also being used on Pier 84 and Pier 44 in Long Island City. The NYC Department of City Wide Administrative Services is overseeing each of these projects.
