Tiffany Street Pier, New York
The successful water cleanup in our ports and harbors has brought an unexpected, and devastating effect - the resurgence of the marine wood borer. This can reduce wood structures from an average service life from 10-15 years to 7. Alternative material systems are now being used, including ACT Composite Timbers. Utilizing post-consumer plastics as the source for the resin matrix of the timber offers the advantage of removing PET plastics from landfills as well as providing exceptional performance in marine/waterfront environments. ACT composite timbers are not susceptible to corrosion from salt/fresh water nor wood-boring organisms.
In 1995, the Tiffany Street Pier, The Bronx, New York was opened to the public (originally constructed from a composite timber product). The 410-foot demonstration pier included decking, handrails, gazebo and other ancillary products. Unfortunately, the pier burned down during an intense lightening storm. The city was, however, so pleased with the pier, plans for its rebuilding were made using ACT Composite Timbers. Measures were taken to avoid the previous misfortune including product reformulation to withstand even the most violent of lightening strikes and the use of a lightening diverter located at the top of the gazebo. The pier was reopened to the public in early 2000.

Decking & Railings
The first step to the rebuild of Tiffany Street Pier was pile foundation construction prior to the laying of the ACT Composite Timber deck. As with all ACT Timber products, standard woodworking tools can be used.

Gazebo
The gazebo was constructed throughout the three month installation. A lightening diverter was placed on the completed gazebo. |

The Tiffany Street Pier was reopened in early spring, 2000.
